"We are all creative animals... we can all transform our experience by doing and feeling something new"

TXD Research investigates the nature of human experience and the creative process, involving the collective transformation of experience through design.

Experience = [Feeling] what we are [Doing] with the [Object]

Experience is [feeling] what we are [doing] with the [object]. For example, letís consider the chair you are sitting in right now. Focus on the bodily sensations you feel [feeling] when you are sitting [doing] in the chair [object]. This relational process unfolding in the present and involving feeling, doing, and object is what constitutes our human experience.

The Five Aggregates: Body as [Doing], Sensation as [Feeling], and Perception as [Object]

Experience as the relational process involving feeling, doing, and object comes from a Buddhist tool called The Five Aggregates. The story tells us how the Buddha himself explained the arising of experience using five piles of grain: attention, disposition, perception, sensation, and body (senses).

TXD Research focuses on the first three aggregates and uses them as active verbs and in relation to one another. This is why the Body becomes the [Doing], the Sensation the [Feeling], and the Perception the [Object].

-Body/Senses: What you Do (for example you move your hand and touch something)

-Sensation: What you Feel (for example moving your hand may feel pleasant or unpleasant)

-Perception: The Object you distinguish (for example distinguishing you are touching a chair)

For TXD Lab design is about the transformation of experience, about changing what we feel and do with the materials we found around us. Look around you, 99% of what you see was designed by somebody: The chair you are sitting in, the computer screen you are looking at, the window through which you are looking the street, cars, and buildings outside.

This world we experience today, however, is the result of an evolution: a trans-generational transformation of our way of living since the beginning of time. By picking up a bone and experiencing it as a tool, the caveman changed the world forever. We are creative animals who like changing the way we live by rearranging the materials we find around us.

How do we become actors of this transformation? How can we transform our experience through design? Simple, for TXD research design is like cooking (but without a recipe!).

Design: Transforming what we [Feel] and [Do] with the [Object]

Design, as any creative act, is about rearranging the materials (milk, water, or electronics and metal if you want) and about tasting the result and rearranging the materials again and again... until we like what we experience. Simple, right?

Designing for Others: We see the Feeling of Others in the light of our own Feeling

-Can we design for other people? YES

-Can we specify the experience of others? NO

Even if we could get inside the body of the so called user and feel what the user feels, design is about transformation. It is about something new, about something that does not exist yet. There is neither recipe nor way for us to analyze the user's needs.

So what can we do? We design for other people with other people, we collaborate and learn from each other... in simple words: we transform together through designing together.
